Compact, Efficient Odor and VOC Treatment System Eliminates Odors and Volatile Organics
Management of odors and volatile organics needs an effective treatment system that is compact, energy-efficient, can handle wide fluctuations in contaminant loadings, and deliver high treatment efficiency. Traditionally, thermal oxidizers and chemical oxidation systems have been used at wastewater treatment plants for treating odors and volatile organics. Biofilters, as compared to thermal oxidizers and chemical oxidation systems, such as scrubbers using hypochlorite and sodium hydroxide, have several advantages, which includes:
- No chemical usage, thereby eliminating on-site chemical handling and storage
- No generation of by-products, such as chlorine
- Energy-efficient with no consumption off natural gas
- Compact with footprint of a chemical scrubber
- Existing chemical scrubbers can be retrofitted to become biofilters
- Low gas-phase pressure drop
- Significantly lower water consumption when compared to chemical scrubbers
PRD Tech, Inc. was the first company to demonstrate retrofitting of chemical scrubbers into biofilters at the Dry Creek WWTP, Sanitation District No. 1, which was completed in 2001 and is still operating successfully. This was also the first full-scale demonstration of PRD Tech’s biomedia cleaning system which prevents accumulation of excessive biomass within the biomedia, thereby eliminating increasing gas-phase pressure drops as a function of time. Most synthetic media biofilters have no biomedia cleaning strategy, which results in pressure build-up and lower gas flows. PRD Tech guarantees its media against clogging for at least 10 years.
